iPhone Ad News: Google to Acquire Mobile Advertising Firm AdMob

Google today announced that it has agreed to acquire mobile advertising firm AdMob in a deal valued at $750 million. AdMob is currently the world’s largest mobile advertising provider and is utilized by many of the top ad-supported iPhone applications.

The deal will help Google in its efforts to develop more effective tools for creating, serving and analyzing emerging mobile ads formats. As this ecosystem continues to grow, the company expects these new marketing media to offer significant benefits:

- Advertisers will be better able to engage mobile users with AdMob’s ad formats
- Publishers and developers will be able to monetize their content more effectively, which has benefits for the wider mobile ecosystem
- Users will see more relevant ads and ultimately get access to more ad-supported content and applications – improving their mobile experience

In a blog post about the pending deal, Google executives Susan Wojcicki and Vic Gundotra note the attractive market presented by iPhone and Android users for mobile advertising:

We’ve written in the past about how mobile phones are becoming an increasingly indispensable part of our daily lives, and we continue to see how great devices with full Internet browsers and vibrant app marketplaces are driving an explosion of usage. In fact:

- iPhone and Android users browse the Internet more often than anyone else [Morgan Stanley], contributing to Google’s 5x mobile search growth over the past two years
- And a quarter of these same iPhone and Android users spend nearly 90 minutes per day using applications on their devices [AdMob]

Boot OS X, XP, and Ubuntu from a Mac

If you're particularly indecisive about your regular operating system, or just want access to all three for testing purposes, Wired's How-To Wiki has the details on getting a triple-boot system (or beyond) working with free software tools.

It's not for those who like to avoid terminal commands, and it's definitely not meant to be crammed into a half-hour lunch break. But Wired's guide is fairly thorough, assuming that burning an image to CD is base-level knowledge. You'll use the rEFIt tool to set up a multi-system boot screen, the Lifehacker favorite GParted Live CD to smooth things over once your hard drive is carved up into partitions, and a free copy of Ubuntu, while it's assumed your copy of XP (or Vista, presumably) is available and legitimate.

There are, of course, easier ways to get at multiple operating systems from one system, like using virtualization software such as VirtualBox, VMWare, Parallels, and many others. But if you're looking for the no-slowdown, full-on multi-OS experience, Wired's got it laid out for you.

How To Use A Facebook Badge As Your Email Signature [Mac Only]

If you haven’t already read, I’ve shown you how to use HTML, photos and iTunes status in your Mac Mail signature in a previous article. I loved my signature, it had some attitude. Unfortunately, I upgraded to Snow Leopard and shortly found out that it had broken the Mail plugin I used to create the signature.

At the time of writing, the plugin, which is called SignatureProfiler has been updated for Snow Leopard but for the last couple of months, I’ve reverted to using good old reliable text as my email signature — until today.

I recently found out how to spruce up emailing by using my Facebook profile badge as a signature. It’s pretty neat and like all Facebook badges, you can easily customize it to your liking. We’ll go through the steps required to make it in a little while. Right now, I’d like to point out a few things.

Firstly, this trick is meant to be used in Mail, Mac’s default desktop mailing application. It works without the need for any addition plugins but you are required to set up your email accounts in Mail. Secondly, you also need to pair the account with a signature — just text will be fine at this point, it doesn’t really matter since it’s about to be replaced. Lastly, you’ll need TextWrangler, a free HTML-capable text editor or any other HTML editor.

We've mentioned Omnibar in passing in a couple of posts, namely our guide to turning Firefox into a Google Chrome clone and our post detailing how to use the Firefox 4.0 theme, but it's a useful extension whether or not you're trying to make Firefox look like another browser. You can still switch your default search engines, you can still use keyword bookmarking (my favorite Firefox feature), and the extension features special shortcuts for searching non-default engines (try your query with @y, for example, to search Yahoo).
